SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Masyarakat Indonesia begitu akrab dengan berbagai cerita hantu, tidak terkecuali dengan wewe gombel. Bagaimana asal-usul kisah dari hantu ini?
Dikutip dari buku "Kumpulan Kisah Nyata Hantu di 13 Kota" oleh Argo Wikanjati, wewe gombel disebut sebagai sebuah istilah dalam tradisi Jawa yang berarti roh jahat atau hantu yang suka menculik anak-anak, tapi tidak mencelakainya.
Konon, anak yang diculik biasanya adalah anak-anak yang ditelantarkan dan diabaikan orangtuanya. Wewe gombel biasa menakut-nakuti orangtua si anak atas sikap dan perilakunya kepada anaknya hingga mereka sadar.
Ketika sadar, wewe gombel akan mengembalikan anak tersebut. Berdasarkan kisah yang beredar, wewe gombel adalah roh dari seorang perempuan yang meninggal bunuh diri karena dikejar masyarakat. Ia dituduh membunuh suaminya.
Peristiwa itu terjadi setelah si suami berselingkuh dengan perempuan lain. Disebut-sebut, alasan si suami selingkuh karena istrinya tak dapat memberikan anak.
Akhirnya, ia dijauhi dan dibenci suaminya. Hal tersebut juga membuat perempuan itu dikucilkan hingga jadi gila dan gembel.
Berdasarkan legenda lainnya, wewe gombel hanyalah kisah yang disampaikan orangtua pada anak-anaknya agar tidak bermain sampai larut malam. Mengingat saat zaman dahulu, listrik belum dapat dirasakan secara merata sehingga orangtua cenderung khawatir anaknya diserang hewan buas.
Di sisi lain, ciri wewe gombel digambarkan sebagai perempuan yang dapat berubah wujud menjadi siapa saja dengan ukuran payudara besar.
