Dilansir dari Britannica, alasan Anda tidak merasa geli ketika menggelitik diri sendiri adalah karena saat menggerakkan bagian tubuh Anda sendiri, bagian dari otak memonitor gerakan tersebut dan mengantisipasi sensasi yang akan ditimbulkannya. Misal, Anda tidak terlalu menyadari jika lengan bergesekan dengan sisi tubuh Anda saat berjalan, tetapi Anda akan terkejut jika orang lain menyentuh Anda dengan cara yang sama.
Otak Anda tahu bahwa jari-jari yang mencolek tulang rusuk Anda adalah jari-jari sendiri, jadi otak Anda akan menurunkan respons sensorik.
Bagaimana mengetahui hal ini? Para ilmuwan di University College London mulai dengan menggunakan pencitraan otak fungsional untuk membandingkan bagaimana orang merespons gelitikan diri sendiri dan gelitikan orang lain.
Mereka menemukan bahwa korteks somatosensori - bagian otak yang bertanggung jawab atas sensasi tubuh - memiliki respons yang lebih rendah terhadap gelitikan diri sendiri dibandingkan dengan gelitikan dari luar. Para ilmuwan juga mengamati aktivitas yang menunjukkan bahwa otak kecil memonitor gerakan dan mengirimkan sinyal untuk menekan respons somatosensorik ketika sentuhan dihasilkan sendiri.
