Mengapa Pintu Masuk Penumpang Pesawat Ada di Sisi Kiri?

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Pernahkah Anda memerhatikan soal penumpang selalu naik ke pesawat dari sisi kiri burung besi tersebut? Ternyata, ada alasan fungsional dan historis yang berbeda hingga praktik ini tetap menjadi standar dalam industri perjalanan udara.

Seorang profesor di University of Nevada, Las Vegas, sejarawan, sekaligus mantan pilot maskapai penerbangan, Dan Bubb mengatakan bahwa ada dua alassan penumpang menaiki pesawat dari sisi kiri.

"Alasan pertama adalah untuk tujuan sejarah," katanya kepada Newsweek.

Dikatakannya, hal tersebut mengacu pada masa ketika "para pelaut mengemudikan kapal dengan dayung di sisi kanan karena kebanyakan orang tidak kidal." Ini berarti ketika kapal memasuki pelabuhan, mereka akan menaiki kapal dari sisi kiri atau sisi 'pelabuhan.'

"Ini masih menjadi tradisi dalam menaiki pesawat penumpang," jelasnya.

Alasan lainnya adalah terkait keselamatan dan efisiensi operasional. "Banyak operasi darat yang berlangsung di sisi kanan pesawat seperti pengisian bahan bakar, bongkar muat tas, dan katering," lanjutnya.

Bubb menyebut, "Akan sangat berbahaya untuk menaiki penumpang di sisi pesawat itu saat operasi ini berlangsung."

Sementara, penumpang yang membutuhkan bantuan khusus terkadang dinaiki dari sisi kanan. Terkadang, lift khusus disediakan untuk mereka di sisi pesawat itu.

Dalam artikel Reader's Digest pada Februari 2023, pilot komersial Andrew Stagg menjelaskan lebih lanjut tentang hubungan bahari tersebut.

"Penumpang harus naik dan turun dari perahu dari sisi kiri, karena ada bagian seperti kemudi yang terdapat di sisi kanan perahu. Sebagian besar perancang pesawat terbang dan jetway mengikuti konvensi yang sama," katanya.

Menurut AFAR, Bob van der Linden, seorang kurator di National Air and Space Museum di Washington, D.C., menyebut bahwa pada 1930-an, "Boeing 247, pesawat terbang modern pertama, memiliki pintu penumpang terbuka di sebelah kanan, seperti kebiasaan United Airlines pada saat itu."

"Seiring berjalannya waktu, seiring berkembangnya industri dan bandara menjadi semakin sibuk, pintu sebelah kiri menjadi pengaturan yang lebih disukai sehingga operasi bandara dapat disederhanakan dan distandarisasi," tambahnya.
