Dengan teknologi yang ada saat ini, jawabannya adalah mungkin! Daging yang dibudidayakan dari sel - tanpa perlu memelihara dan menyembelih hewan - kini menjadi kenyataan. Produksi daging dengan cara ini akan menggeser anggapan bahwa daging yang dijual di pasaran adalah hasil dari peternakan. Kini, para ilmuwan juga memproduksi daging.
Daging yang diproduksi tanpa harus memelihara dan menyembelih hewan, dengan rasa yang sama persis seperti daging yang manusia konsumsi sekarang, jadi tujuan industri-industi baru yang peduli keberlangsungan lingkungan.
Berbagai perusahaan yang memproduksi daging "hasil budi daya laboratorium", sedang berusaha mengembangkan diri dengan cepat. Mereka bermitra dengan perusahaan daging tradisional, menarik lebih banyak investor, dan membangun fasilitas produksi baru di Amerika Serikat dan tempat lain.
Namun, penggunaan daging dari sel secara luas masih jauh dari harapan, karena biaya pembuatan daging ini mahal. Lalu ada tantangan ilmiah, seperti mempelajari cara meniru tekstur daging steak yang kompleks. Regulasi pemerintah juga menjadi kendala lain. Hanya Singapura dan Amerika Serikat yang mengizinkan penjualan daging hasil budi daya. (DKD)
