Fakta Unik: Asal-usul Polisi Tidur

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Polisi tidur kerap dijumpai ketika melintas di berbagai kawasan seantero jagat, termasuk Indonesia. Dikenal pula dengan istilah speed bump, salah satu fungsi polisi tidur adalah untuk menghambat laju kendaraan.

Lantas, bagaimana asal-usul polisi tidur? Dilansir dari laman Driving, polisi tidur awalnya berasal dari Amerika Serikat pada awal 1900-an.

Polisi tidur pertama ditambahkan ke jalan di Chatham, New Jersey pada 1906. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengurangi kecepatan kendaraan di area pemukiman.

Setelah hampir 50 tahun, polisi tidur karet pertama dibuat pada 1953 ketika ilmuwan pemenang Nobel Prize, Arthur Holly Compton, menciptakan "Holly Hump."

Polisi tidur pertama yang dipasang di Eropa pada 1970, tepatnya di Delft, Belanda. Butuh waktu 13 tahun sebelum polisi tidur hadir di Inggris sebagai bagian dari Peraturan Jalan Raya (Road Hump) yang asli pada 1983.

Peraturan ini mengizinkan pemasangan polisi tidur berbentuk bulat dengan ketinggian hingga 100mm, berukuran 3,7 meter, di jalan raya di Inggris dan Wales dengan pembatasan kecepatan 30 mph atau sekitar 48,2 km per jam atau kurang.

Para pengemudi mulai menyebut mereka sebagai "polisi tidur" karena semakin banyak yang muncul di jalan raya pada era 80-an. Julukan ini diberikan karena kemampuan polisi tidur untuk mengingatkan pengendara bahwa mereka harus waspada terhadap kecepatan mereka.
