The Pretender menceritakan tentang pemerintah yang mengontrol warganya dengan tirani dan tidak membiarkan ada orang yang berani melawan dan hanya pemerintah yang bisa mengendalikan rakyatnya.
Menghadapi pemerintah seperti itu memicu adanya sekelompak rakyat yang berani mengambi sikap untuk melawan pemerintah yang sudah berbohon kepada warganya selama bertahun-tahun. The Pretender artinya penipu yang dimaksud adalah si pemerintah tersebut.
Vokalis dan gitaris Foo Fighters Dave Grohl penulis lirik The Pretender pernah berbicara soal inspirasi dalam menulis lagu tersebut. Hal itu terungkap ketika mantan anggota grup band Nirvana tersebut ketika melakukan sesi wawancara di sebuah radio di Inggris.
Grohl mengungkap rasa kecewanya kepada pemerintah dan rakyat tidak mendapatkan apa yang dijanjikan pemerintah. Lagu The Pretender masuk dalam album Foo Fighters yang rilis tahun 2007. Diduga ia mengkritik pemerintah Amerika Serikat saat itu yakni Presiden George W Bush.
Selama menjadi orang nomor satu di Amerika Serikat memang Bush kerap melakukan kontroversi hingga memicu amarah dari masyarakat termasuk para personel Foo Fighters. Pada masa kepemimpinan Bush banyak musisi yang cukup vocal mengkritik sang presiden.
