SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The South Kalimantan Provincial Government set a MURI Record for the longest Banjar’s traditional Sasirangan fabric, stretching 5.7 kilometers.

This Sasirangan fabric has 107 motifs and was stretched by 6,127 people in a kelayang dandang formation, which is a traditional Banjar game. This record also marked the opening of the Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival on Tuesday (8/20). 

Regional National Craft Council Chairperson Raudatul Jannah hopes that this record can bring the traditional fabric to international attention. “We have seen the sasirangan fabric that has been stretched out with a variety of different colors, reflecting that cultural heritage never extincts,” said Raudatul.

The sasirangan fabric itself is a traditional South Kalimantan fabric that is believed to cure diseases and ward off evil spirits. The Education and Culture Ministry has also designated this fabric as one of 33 traditional fabrics of intangible cultural heritage back in 2010.
