SEAToday.com, Jakarta - OpenAI has announced it will discontinue GPT-4 in ChatGPT and fully replace it with its latest AI model, GPT-4o, starting April 30, 2025.

“In direct evaluations, GPT-4o consistently outperforms GPT-4 in writing, programming, STEM, and more,” OpenAI wrote in its official changelog, as reported by TechCrunch, as quoted on Antara.

While GPT-4 will no longer be available in ChatGPT, it will remain accessible via OpenAI’s API. The company noted GPT-4o has improved capabilities in instruction-following, problem-solving, and maintaining conversational context.

Launched in March 2023, GPT-4 was used in both ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot. It was succeeded by GPT-4 Turbo in November 2023, offering better speed and cost-efficiency.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously disclosed that training GPT-4 cost over $100 million.

The model retirement is expected to pave the way for upcoming AI models. According to code findings by developer Tibor Blaho, OpenAI is currently preparing the GPT-4.1 series, including GPT-4.1-mini and GPT-4.1-nano.
