4 Spooky Indonesian Horror Movies Hitting Theaters This October
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - As October approaches, a series of Indonesian horror movies are set to be released. These movies offer storylines inspired by real events that have occurred in various regions of Indonesia.
So, what Indonesian horror movies will be released in October 2024? Are you ready for an adrenaline rush? Check out the complete summary, as quoted from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) website below.
1. "Kuasa Gelap" - October 3
The movie "Kuasa Gelap" presents a chilling horror story about the ritual of exorcism within the Catholic Church. The movie centers around a priest who becomes involved in an exorcism case involving a teenager possessed by an evil entity. However, amidst his duties, the priest also grapples with doubts about his faith, especially as the events remind him of his deceased younger sister. "Kuasa Gelap" is a unique movie as it explores the Catholic religious background in Indonesia. Previously, most Indonesian horror movies have focused more on mystical elements from an Islamic perspective. Therefore, this movie offers a fresh perspective by showing the practice of exorcism within the Catholic tradition, which is rarely depicted in Indonesian horror movies.
2. "Pulau Hantu" - October 10
This movie is a reboot of the previous trilogy, "Pulau Hantu 1" (2007), "Pulau Hantu 2" (2008), and "Pulau Hantu 3" (2012). Instead of continuing the existing storyline, this movie presents a completely new story concept.
While previous Indonesian horror movies often relied on sexually suggestive elements, the latest "Pulau Hantu" offers a fresh take on the genre with its theme of adventure horror and added comedy, reflecting the evolving tastes of a more diverse audience.
The movies' synopsis follows Dara (Taskya Namya), who disobeys her mother's warning and embarks on a graduation celebration with Pandu (Samo Rafael), Niki (Cindy Nirmala), Lathi (Hannah Hannon), and Noah (Bukie B Mansyur) on a boat. Unbeknownst to them, their ship is stranded on a nameless island. As Dara and her friends find themselves trapped there, she begins to feel a deep longing for her mother.
3. "Kemah Terlarang: Kesurupan Massal" - October 10
Directed by Ginanti Rona and starring well-known actors such as Derby Romero and Nayla D. Purnama, this movie is based on a true event that occurred in 2016. In this event, dozens of students from Giri Handayani Health Vocational School, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, experienced mass hysteria during a camping trip. The remaining students then struggled to save themselves and tried to find a way to stop the terrifying terror, by seeking help from a villager who knew the dark secrets of the forest, which turned out to be a forbidden forest.
4. "Perewangan" - October 24
The movie "Perewangan" features Davina Karamoy, who previously gained attention in the film "Ipar Adalah Maut". Adapted from a thread on the X account @JeroPoint, this movie tells the story of a pact with a wealth-attracting spirit. The story centers on Maya's family, who seem normal until her mother falls mysteriously ill, and strange terrors begin to haunt the family, leading to the death of the father. The ritual performed by her mother, such as pounding an empty mortar every morning, turns out to be part of a pact with a spirit to bring prosperity to the family business. This ritual is a hereditary tradition that also involves other mediums, such as a magic mirror.
