SEAToday.com, Jakarta - At the TIP ON EVENT 2024 talkshow themed "Shaping A Collaborative Innovation Ecosystem" on Wednesday (10/2), Sadayuki Abeta, OREX Evangelist, Chief Open RAN Strategist at NTT DOCOMO, and Chief Technology Officer of OREX SAI, introduced Open RAN technology.

Open RAN is a revolutionary approach to radio access networks (RANs) that allows equipment and systems from different vendors to interoperate seamlessly through standardized, open-specification base stations. This openness offers numerous advantages for global mobile network operators, including reduced supply chain risks, competitive pricing, and improved quality.

Abeta likened OREX services to the iconic Japanese animation Doraemon, known for its multitude of technological gadgets that solve problems. He emphasized that OREX Open RAN's features enable customers to combine products from various vendors, resulting in highly cost-effective base stations.

"OREX can significantly reduce the total cost of ownership, minimize power consumption, and streamline network design and operations," he explained.

In Indonesia, Open RAN has been successfully deployed in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) through a collaborative effort with Telkomsel. By installing multiple remote units (RUs) in various locations, the project has achieved indoor 5G coverage, ensuring reliable connectivity and stable performance, even during events like Indonesia's 79th Independence Day celebration.

TIP ON EVENT 2024 also discussed the concept of neutral hosting as a viable solution that companies and business entities can provide to serve multiple stakeholders or operators.

Abeta acknowledged the challenges faced in deploying open networks, such as limited infrastructure access, varying regulations, and the need for collaboration with multiple stakeholders. He called for government support to facilitate open network deployment and address regulatory hurdles. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of collaboration among industry players to create a thriving open network ecosystem.

"I am optimistic about the potential of open networks to drive innovation and improve connectivity," Abeta stated.

The event also explored the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in areas like planning, transportation, and infrastructure. The conclusion was that technology and innovation must be implemented to enhance efficiency, requiring increased collaboration among operators, vendors, and system integrators to achieve successful outcomes and benefit Indonesia.
