Open RAN Takes Center Stage at TIP ON EVENT 2024

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - At the recent Telecom Infra Project (TIP) 2024 event in Jakarta, NTT Docomo's Chief Open RAN Strategist, Sadayuki Abeta, highlighted the crucial role of Open RAN technology in ensuring a seamless communication experience during Indonesia's 79th Independence Day ceremony at the new capital, Nusantara.
Abeta explained that Docomo's 5G Open RAN solution played a pivotal role in the event, working in tandem with Telkomsel's 5GC network. Additionally, the deployment leveraged hardware accelerators from NVIDIA and base station software from Fujitsu.
Docomo's contribution to the IKN ceremony was twofold:
Seamless Connectivity
The interoperability between Docomo's 5G technology and Telkomsel's network ensured stable connectivity, even in indoor environments, providing reliable coverage for attendees.
Remote Work Support
Docomo introduced a "Remote Work Support" solution, leveraging Microsoft HoloLens technology. This innovative solution enabled experts to assist on-site personnel in remote areas, addressing workforce shortages, accelerating technical transfers, and enhancing safety and productivity.
Abeta emphasized that the success of such collaborations lies in the ability of vendors to focus on their respective areas of expertise. For instance, in the realm of 5G technology, vendors can concentrate on developing new services or enhancing network performance.
"With Open RAN, we have the flexibility to choose the best solutions based on specific scenarios," Abeta said.
Docomo has successfully applied its 5G technology to various sectors, including education, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, and construction. Abeta highlighted how 5G can bridge the digital divide, enabling remote areas to access quality education and other services.
"For instance, with 5G networks, people want to create new services. Or operators, as I've mentioned, want to increase their revenue. Customers want to enjoy these services. So, we'll encounter many cases like this in the future," Sadayuki said.
"The advantage of Open RAN is that we can choose the best solution based on your specific scenario," he added.
Furthermore, Sadayuki highlighted several successful business developments leveraging DOCOMO's 5G technology, including in education, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, and construction.
"In metropolitan areas, for example, you can easily access education. However, in rural areas, this is not as straightforward. But with networks, you can solve this problem," he explained.
In conclusion, the successful deployment of Open RAN at the IKN ceremony showcases the technology's potential to transform the telecommunications industry and drive innovation.
