Barbie Hsu, Iconic Meteor Garden Star, Passes Away at 48

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, best known for her role in the hit idol drama Meteor Garden (2001), has passed away at the age of 48.
As quoted from The Straits Times, the heartbreaking news was confirmed on February 3 by her younger sister, renowned Taiwanese host Dee Hsu, in a statement sent to Taiwanese media.
The statement, written primarily in Chinese, read:
"Thank you for all your concern. Over the Chinese New Year holiday, our entire family traveled to Japan for a vacation. My most beloved and kindest elder sister, Barbie, contracted influenza-related pneumonia and has unfortunately left us."
"I am grateful to be her sister in this lifetime, and I cherish all the years we spent taking care of each other and keeping each other company. I will always be thankful for her and remember her. Shan (Barbie Hsu’s nickname), rest in peace. We love you always. Together, we will remember forever."
Hsu leaves behind two children from her previous marriage with Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, whom she divorced in 2021. Just three months after the split, she rekindled her romance with South Korean musician Koo Jun-yup, whom she married in 2022.
She was accompanied her younger sister Dee, an older sister who is not a public figure, and their mother.
Barbie Hsu rose to stardom with her portrayal of the lovable and strong-willed Shan Cai in Meteor Garden (2001), the Taiwanese adaptation of Hana Yori Dango. The drama became a phenomenon across Asia, cementing her status as a top idol actress.
Beyond Meteor Garden, she starred in several other popular dramas and films, including:
- Mars (2004) – A psychological romance drama where she played Han Qi Luo, a shy art student who falls for a troubled yet charismatic motorbike racer played by Vic Chou.
- Summer's Desire (2010) – A love triangle drama in which she portrayed Yin Xiamo, a determined woman caught between two powerful men.
