Instagram Tests "Dislike" Button, Making the Comment Section More Comfortable?

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Social media platform Instagram is trialing a new feature that allows users to give a “dislike” reaction to comments they don't like or think are irrelevant in Feed and Reels posts.
“Some of you may have seen that we're testing a new button next to comments on Instagram, this gives people a private way to signal that they don't feel comfortable with the comment,” Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri said as reported by Tech Crunch on Saturday (2/15).
Adam said that Instagram will not show the number of “dislikes” a comment receives, and no other user will know if someone has given a “dislike”.
“We can integrate this signal into the ranking of comments to move disliked comments down. Our hope is that this can help make comments more friendly on Instagram,” Mosseri said.
The “dislike” button feature was discovered last month by app developer Alessandro Paluzzi who posted about Instagram testing the feature.
The company that owns Instagram, Meta, said that the trial aims to improve the quality of user comments on the social media platform.
“We're testing a new button next to each comment on a Reel or Feed post for people to privately signal that they don't feel comfortable with a particular comment or find it relevant,” a Meta spokesperson said.
“We're testing this with a small group of people to start. Later, we may also test moving these comments down in the comments section to help create a better experience,” she added.
For now, the feature is still being tested with a small group of users. If the results are positive, we may all be able to use this feature on Instagram soon!
