Muslims in Singapore are Permitted to Eat Lab-Grown Meat from Halal Animal Cells

SEAToday.com, Singapore-In the middle of the world effort to create more sustainable food solutions, The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore permits the country's Muslim population to consume lab-cultivated meat. Singaporean Muslims may consume the lab-grown meat if the cells originate from halal animals, and is not contaminated with non-halal components.

In Islam, a qualified religious scholar known as a Mufti issues religious rulings called fatwas to guide the Muslim community on various aspects.

Moreover, on Friday (2/2), the Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir launched a two-day conference on fatwa in contemporary societies. In addition, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir also says that the decision is one of the examples of fatwa research integrating with technology and social change.

Additionally, the Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs, Masagos Zulkifli, informed local reporters that the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore has been studying the issue of lab-cultivated meat since 2022.

Following the conference, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore released a statement stating that producing novel foods through more environmentally sustainable means provides a practical way to contribute to environmental sustainability.
