SEAToday.com, Brentwood - The residence of pop icon Marilyn Monroe has been declared as a historic cultural landmark, saving it from being demolished.

The Los Angeles City Council approved the nomination on Wednesday (6/26), intending to help protect the house from being razed by its current owners. The Spanish colonial-style residence located in the Brentwood neighborhood, Los Angeles, became home for Monroe back in 1962. It was her first and last house, as she passed away six months later.

The battle for this house had been going on since last summer. The current owner bought the house last year and planned to demolish it to expand their property next door. They also claimed that numerous remodeling had changed the house far from its original state.

Council member Traci Park said losing the house would be a “devastating blow” to the city and its historic preservation. She also planned to evaluate tour bus restrictions in Brentwood after neighbors complained about unwanted traffic around the estate.
