SEAToday.com, Jakarta-Halloween is celebrated every October 31 in countries all around the world, especially in America and Europe. In every Halloween celebration, there's always a scarily-carved pumpkin with a lantern in it. So, why is Halloween iconic with pumpkins?
Rumor has it that pumpkins are associated with Jack O'Lantern. Jack O'Lantern is believed to be an evil spirit who wanders around carrying a lantern. This myth originated in Ireland. Jack O'Lantern is apparently a nickname for Stingy Jack. Stingy Jack is thought to have invited the devil to drink with him.
On Halloween, many houses are decorated with pumpkins that have been carved with spooky faces. Since pumpkins were originally used in Ireland, many of them moved to the United States and introduced the tradition of Halloween in the country until it became globally popular.
The tradition of celebrating Halloween originally came from the Celtic tradition of Samhain, where people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off evil spirits. Halloween began in the 8th century and is celebrated on November 1 after the transfer of All Saint's Day from the Catholic Church.
On Halloween, it is believed that the spirits of the dead will visit their homes and meet their living families. This includes the O'Lantern as an evil spirit that will roam every Halloween.
Although Halloween is usually celebrated by people abroad, that doesn't mean it can't be celebrated in Indonesia. You can experience the thrill of Halloween with your loved ones.
Some activities that can be enjoyed on Halloween include watching horror movies, carving pumpkins to make Jack O'Lantern faces, costume parties, sharing horror stories, and visiting places that might be considered haunted.
