Creative Economy Minister: Women from Rote Island Serves as Golden Opportunity for Indonesian Film Industry
SEAToday.com, Jakarta-The Creative Economy Ministry said that "Women from Rote Island" stepping into the 97th Academy Awards or Oscar 2025 is a golden opportunity for Indonesian film industry.
"We are ready to support that, because it's the first ever golden opportunity, we won't let it go to waste because this is a learning opportunity for those who produced the movie and also serves as a track record for people in the national film industry," said Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya, Thursday (11/28).
The movie, which has received over 30 awards local and abroad, also serves as Indonesia's diplomacy through culture, especially in terms of films.
This is in line with President Prabowo Subianto's goal of supporting 17 creative economy subsectors, one of them being films.
Riefky said that the Creative Economy Ministry will collaborate across ministries to support "Women from Rote Island" to go to the Oscars.
"Our task is to support this ecosystem along with the Culture Minister dan Tourism Minister, and we will meet to discuss the technical aspects, because this is something very important. We're ready to work with other ministries," Riefky explained.
The Creative Economy Ministry also aims to create a better ecosystem that can develop Indonesian filmmakers and help them live a life of higher quality.
Meanwhile, "Women from Rote Island" producer Jeremias Nyangoen expessed his gratitude for the government's help in supporting the movie to become an Oscar nominee in Best International Future Film.
"We don't know where this will take "Women from Rote Island", but we want to be like other countries that is already well developed in terms of film," Jeremias said.
The movie "Women from Rote Island" talks about violence against women and workers in eastern Indonesia. This film has also received awards, including Piala Citra for its scriptwriting and Festival Film Indonesia (FFI) in 2023 for being the best long story film.
