SEAToday.com, Jakarta-Aceh's Gayo Arabica coffee has secured the first spot of the top three Asian coffee beans according to TasteAtlas, Wednesday (10/16).
TasteAtlas explained in their official website that Gayo Arabica is a coffee variety produced in the districts of Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues, all of which are located in the Gayo Highlands.
“Cultivated at altitudes between 900 and 1700 meters above sea level, Gayo Arabica Coffee has high acidity and a soft bitterness, with a strong and complex flavor reminiscent of nuts, caramel, chocolate, and fruits,” it continued.
There are several varieties of Gayo Arabica that are cultivated: Borbor, Timtim, P-88, Ateng Jaluk, and S 795, all of which can be used as single varietal coffee or combined in blends.
TasteAtlas believes that Gayo Arabica Coffee has a long history, therefore it has become a significant part of the local culture.
On the other hand, the second and third place on the list are secured by two beans from Thailand: Kafae Doi Chaang (Chiang Dao) and Kafae Doi Tung (Mae Sai).
Kafae Doi Chaang is an organic coffee from the Arabica varieties Caturra, Catimor, and Catuai, cultivated in the hills of northeastern Thailand on Doi Chaang mountain. Meanwhile, Kafae Doi Tung is an Arabica coffee bean collected from coffee plants grown in the Doi area. This Arabica hybrid coffee is made from a cross of Catimor, Catuai, and Caturra hybrids.
