Indonesian Short Film Wins Top Prize at Berlinale 2025

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesian filmmaker Khozy Rizal's short film Little Rebels Cinema Club won the prestigious Crystal Bear award in the Generation Kplus Short Film category at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), held from February 13–23, 2025.
Set in 2008 Indonesia, the 17-minute film follows 14-year-old Doddy and his dream of making movies with his friends, despite living in Parepare, a town without a cinema. Determined to pursue filmmaking, Doddy aspires to move to Jakarta.
Khozy Rizal emphasized the film’s theme of passion for cinema, which resonated strongly with audiences at Berlinale. He expressed pride in bringing Indonesian storytelling to the global stage.
Aside from Little Rebels Cinema Club, four other Indonesian films were showcased at Berlinale 2025: After Colossus by Timoteus Anggawan Kusno, Sammi: Who Can Detach His Body Parts by Rein Maychaelson, Mirage: Eigenstate by Riar Rizaldi, and Queer as Punk by Yihwen Chen.
The Indonesian Embassy in Berlin reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Indonesian films at future Berlinale editions and strengthening connections between Indonesian filmmakers and the German film industry.
